WELCOME TO AESS

The purpose of the Association for Environmental Studies and Sciences (AESS) is to serve the faculty, students and staff of the 1000+ interdisciplinary "environmental" programs in North America and around the world.  We seek to strengthen teaching, research and service in environmental studies and sciences, and to improve communication across boundaries that too often divide the traditional academic disciplines -- the physical, biological, and social sciences, and the humanities -- that need to be brought to bear in understanding and dealing with environmental problems and solutions.  The association works to support the professional development of Association members not just as individuals but also to advance Environmental Studies and Sciences as a whole.

AESS Membership Passes 450!  Stock markets may be tumbling, but over the past two months, our membership has been soaring.  We started this academic year with 240 members, and we have now passed the 450 mark.   Welcome, all!  If you haven't yet joined -- or if you have friends and colleagues who haven't yet joined -- we need your help to keep the momentum going.  You can join the wave now: Visit the Member Signup / Information page.  If you join before Dec. 31, 2008, you will be recognized as one of the official "Founding Members" of the new Association.

AESS Constitution, Bylaws, receive unanimous approval!

The votes are now in on the initial Constitution/Bylaws for AESS, and every single one was a "yes."  Now we need to revise the initial documents to transform them for longer-term purposes.  A committee will be offering a package of suggested revisions to the larger AESS membership at the Madison meeting in Oct., 2009.  To review the initial Constitution and Bylaws, click one of the two file formats to download: AESS Initial Constitution & Bylaws 8.22.08.DOC or AESS Initial Constitution & Bylaws 8.22.08.PDF

2009 Annual Meeting to be held in Madison, Wisc., Oct. 8-11, 2009!   Look for cool innovations, including "fabulous prizes" for the institution with the largest number of members by the time of the meeting.  Watch this space for updates.
